The Western Transportation Research Consortium (WTRC) pooled fund study (TPF-5(526))
addresses high priority transportation research topics of common interest to the western states.
WTRC encourages coordination among its member states and provides resources and management of collaborative studies and initiatives.
Program Updates
WTRC Sets Research Agenda in Boise
Idaho Transportation Department hosted WTRC’s 2026 meeting and peer exchange from May 19 to 21 in Boise. The two-and-a-half-day event included a review of findings from the program’s first full year of research. Members also selected seven new research projects for the 2026 program year. In addition, the meeting featured a research peer exchange for three of its members: Idaho TD, New Mexico DOT and Washington State DOT.
Webinar on AI Safeguards for Research Program and Project Management
WTRC held a webinar in February 2026 for states DOT to help them protect the integrity and ownership of their agency’s research as artificial intelligence (AI) tools are more widely used by researchers. The webinar included a moderated Q-and-A panel with DOT, industry and academia representatives. Watch the webinar recording and access supplemental guidance.
HiMod SME Discussions Available Now
WTRC held subject matter expert (SME) topical discussions in February 2026 on highly modified (HiMod) asphalt. SME presenters shared challenges, successes and best practices related to HiMod binders and mix design (Day 1) and construction (Day 2). Recordings and presentations are available now.
